February 2014 MASH Meeting

ATTENTION All MANIACS!

Due to the winter storm, this month’s meeting will be postponed until next week, Thursday Feb 20th, 7PM @ Stomp N Crush.

  • 2014 Membership Dues are due and remain at $25.00.
  • Club dry stout competition will be next month. Here are the details Mike posted on our facebook page:

Fellow MASHers!

The in house dry stout competition is just a short month away. A reminder that this competition is for all those that have paid their 2014 club dues as of the February 13th meeting.

Here is a quick run down of how this competition will work. Beers will be judged to the BJCP 2008 style guidelines. The category we will be judging is 13A – dry stouts. Please read up on the style guidelines as we will be judging them accordingly as would be in a sanctioned BJCP competition.

Drop off window – Please drop off two 12oz bottles. Please make sure these bottles are mark free, meaning no defining marks. Raised letters such as Sam Adams, Green Flash, Dogfish Head etc etc, will be accepted. Clear or blacked out bottle caps. For example, no Tupper’s craft brew caps or Stomp n Crush caps. Please black them out with a sharpie. PLEASE write your name on paper and attach it to your bottles with a rubber band. Have your entries dropped off by Saturday March 1st BY 5PM @ Stomp N Crush.

Judging will be taking place between March 2-9.

The judging is closed to all but judges. Winners will be announced during the March meeting. Your brews will be judged by 3 certified BJCP judges who all have many many years of BJCP competition experience and who to which I’m very grateful for volunteering to help out.

Also please save enough of your stout to share with all at the March meeting. After all its only a few days away from St. Patty’s day!

January 2013 MASH Brew Club Meeting

This is a reminder that Thursday January 9th is our next meeting 7PM @ Stomp N Crush.
2014 Membership Dues are due and remain at $25.00.  Those paying on or before Thursday will be entered in a raffle to win a sack of grain, beer kit or malt extract.

This month we invite members to bring any alternative adult beverage they have made (wine, mead cider etc.).  Beer only members are certainly welcome to bring……. BEER!

Culinary Arts Night at the Exchange Club

Please join us Thursday September 19th, 6:00-9:00PM in Madison for an evening of great food, drink and music. The Exchange Club of Madison is sponsoring this event and will donate all proceeds to the 5 child abuse prevention centers in Connecticut. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door. The event will be held in the courtyard by Ashley’s Ice Cream, downtown Madison.

** Stomp N Crush will be CLOSED to support this event**

Over 30 of the shoreline’s finest restaurants will be serving there best food and drink. There will also be live entertainment and a silent auction.

Belgian Dark Ale Contest

Calling All MANIACS!

We are holding a fun brew contest using the Wyeast Private Collection Yeast “Belgian Dark Ale”.  All members are encouraged to participate. We recommend groups of at least two members, the club will pay for the yeast. Here are the details (rules further below)…

3822-PC Belgian Dark Ale (Wyeast Private Collection)

Beer Styles: Belgian Strong Dark and Golden Ales, Belgian Quadrupel, Oud Bruin/Flanders Brown, Fruit Beers, Belgian Specialty Beers

Profile: This unique Belgian ale yeast is a high acid producer with balanced ester and phenol production allowing a good expression of malt profile, especially the strong flavors of darker malts and sugars. High alcohol tolerance. Spicy, tart, and dry on the palate with a very complex finish.

  • Alc. Tolerance 12% ABV
  • Flocculation medium
  • Attenuation 74-79%
  • Temp. Range 65-80°F (18-27°C)

Rules:

  1. You use only this yeast in the beer
  2. You keep good notes on fermentation temperature (temperature changes the flavor profile)
  3. Your beer is ready for the December meeting and you bring a growler or a few bottles to the meeting.

Timeframe:

We will order the yeast and have it available by the next meeting (August 8th). If you plan to participate please let Al (info@stompncrush.com) know by July 27th.

Coming Up-

The Clinton chamber of commerce is holding a Beer & Wine tasting event next Friday, May 10th, 6:30 – 8:30 at the Clinton town hall. Tickets are sold in advance only and can be purchased at Glenwood Wine and Spirits (next door to Stomp N Crush). More info is available on the event website.

The June 13th MASH meeting will be held at Bar in New Haven. We will be tasting our attempts to clone their toasted blonde ale. It’s not too late to take part in this activity and brew this up. Call or email Stomp N Crush for details.
